I am not studying archaeology, history, human origins, and Earth science because I have decided to begin another career. I am studying them because I want to understand how we know what happened before any living person was here to witness it.
Some interests are easy to treat casually.
You watch a documentary, read an article, learn an interesting fact, and move on to something else.
That approach was not satisfying the questions I had about the human past.
I wanted to know how scientists determine the age of Earth. I wanted to understand how anyone can reconstruct what a landscape looked like millions of years ago. I wondered where the earliest humans lived, what evidence remains from ancient civilizations, how researchers know where to search for fossils, and what can reasonably be said about the first major human migrations.
I also had questions closer to home.
What happened in the part of Florida where I now live? What historical events affected Volusia County? What evidence remains in landscapes, archives, museums, fossils, maps, objects, and written records?
Those questions crossed too many fields to fit inside one ordinary history course.
They eventually became The Human Story: a structured, independent learning program covering archaeology, history, anthropology, human evolution, geology, paleontology, climate, migration, material culture, and the methods used to reconstruct the past.
This is serious learning without a career requirement
I am treating the subjects seriously because they deserve careful study. I am not claiming that the program awards a degree, creates professional credentials, or qualifies me to work as an archaeologist, historian, anthropologist, geologist, or paleontologist.
The program is a hobby.
It is simply a hobby with a curriculum, progression rules, projects, field experiences, research standards, and enough structure to prevent my curiosity from becoming a collection of disconnected facts.
Why would I build a degree-style program for a hobby?
I enjoy learning.
I do not always need a financial outcome before a subject becomes worth studying.
Much of adult life is organized around what produces income, solves an immediate problem, satisfies an employer, or creates a measurable return. Those priorities are real, especially when money and time are limited.
They do not need to determine every subject I am allowed to explore.
The Human Story is intended to give part of my intellectual life a purpose that is not primarily commercial.
I already have technical projects, business responsibilities, websites, family obligations, and an applied artificial-intelligence program connected to products I hope to build. Those activities often carry expectations about productivity, career development, revenue, or professional capability.
This program serves a different purpose.
It keeps the inquisitive part of my mind moving.
It lets me investigate subjects because they are fascinating, important, strange, unresolved, or connected to questions people have asked for thousands of years.
Not everything I learn has to become a product, a service, a job qualification, or a source of income before it is allowed to matter.
Calling the program a hobby does not mean I plan to treat evidence casually.
I still want to distinguish what is known, inferred, disputed, probable, provisional, and unknown. I want to understand how conclusions are constructed and what evidence could change them.
The freedom comes from the purpose—not from lowering the standards.
UNESCO defines lifelong learning as a process extending across the entire lifespan and recognizes formal, non-formal, and informal learning. It also includes self-directed learning that does not necessarily lead to a recognized qualification.[1]
Why not simply watch documentaries and read random books?
I expect documentaries, books, lectures, museums, websites, and podcasts to remain part of the learning process.
The problem is not that informal learning materials lack value.
The problem is that curiosity can jump too quickly.
One question about fossils leads to human evolution. Human evolution leads to genetics. Genetics leads to migration. Migration leads to climate. Climate leads to geology. Geology leads to dating methods. Dating methods lead to statistics, sampling, calibration, and uncertainty.
Every answer creates several new questions.
Without a structure, I might learn an impressive collection of facts while missing the methods required to evaluate them.
For example, geologists do not rely on one universal method for determining when something happened. The U.S. Geological Survey explains that researchers may use radiometric dating, cosmogenic surface-exposure dating, paleomagnetism, and other methods depending on the material, time range, and question being investigated.[2]
I could know the name of a hominin species without understanding how a fossil was dated. I could recognize an ancient civilization without understanding which sources support the chronology. I could repeat a claim about migration without knowing whether it comes from archaeology, genetics, linguistics, skeletal evidence, environmental reconstruction, or a combination of them.
The curriculum creates an order:
- Foundations before specialization: Writing, scientific reasoning, quantitative literacy, source evaluation, chronology, and ethics come before advanced conclusions.
- Methods before confidence: I need to understand how evidence is recovered, dated, compared, documented, and challenged.
- Context before objects: A fossil, artifact, document, or statistic loses meaning when separated from where it came from and how it was preserved.
- Multiple disciplines before one explanation: Different fields often answer different parts of the same historical question.
- Uncertainty before false certainty: “Unknown,” “disputed,” and “probable” are legitimate conclusions when the evidence does not support anything stronger.
The structure is not there to make the hobby look impressive.
It is there to make the learning cumulative.
What is included in The Human Story?
The complete plan contains 204 credit-equivalents organized from introductory study through optional dissertation-level research.
The term credit-equivalent is a workload reference. It does not mean a college or accrediting institution has awarded academic credit.

The full program is deliberately long.
I do not need to commit emotionally to completing all 204 credit-equivalents before I begin the first course.
The program may end honorably at the associate-, bachelor-, or master-level milestone. It may also continue informally without another formal stage.
The optional doctoral portion should begin only if a question remains interesting enough to justify that level of sustained research.
Continuing merely because the next label sounds more impressive would defeat the purpose.
Academic limitation
The associate-, bachelor-, master-, and doctoral-level descriptions identify increasing depth and workload inside my independent curriculum. They do not represent recognized degrees, institutional enrollment, professional licensure, excavation authority, or permission to use protected sites, artifacts, fossils, or human remains.
What subjects interest me most?
I am interested in nearly all of them, which is one reason the program remains interdisciplinary.
Human origins and deep time are obvious areas of interest.
I want to understand the evidence for human evolution, how different hominin groups are identified, how ancient DNA changed migration models, and how fossils, tools, environments, and genetics can support different parts of the same explanation.
The Smithsonian Human Origins Program identifies early human fossils and archaeological remains—including bones, tools, footprints, hearths, and other traces of behavior—as major sources of evidence about the ancient human past.[3]
Archaeology interests me because it connects human behavior with physical evidence.
An object can be interesting by itself, but its location, depth, association, material, condition, and relationship to other evidence are often what allow it to tell a larger story.
Earth science matters because human history did not happen on an unchanging stage.
Plate tectonics, coastlines, climate, volcanoes, floods, droughts, disease, sea-level change, extinction, and changing landscapes affected where people could live and what choices were available to them.
History adds documents, testimony, institutions, politics, economies, conflict, memory, and the problem of archival silence.
Digital methods add databases, maps, remote sensing, public archives, three-dimensional models, and ways to organize or communicate evidence without physically disturbing a site.
I may eventually choose a concentration, but I do not want specialization to eliminate the breadth that made the program interesting in the first place.
How will I know whether I actually learned something?
Course completion is not supposed to depend primarily on timed tests.
A multiple-choice score can show whether I recognized the expected answer at one moment. It cannot always show whether I can explain the concept, apply it to unfamiliar evidence, identify its limitations, or connect it to another discipline.
The Human Story emphasizes work products instead:
- research notebooks;
- source comparisons;
- evidence matrices;
- maps and timelines;
- field or observation notes;
- mock laboratory exercises;
- artifact or fossil analyses using lawful materials and public collections;
- research papers and literature reviews;
- digital exhibits or educational projects;
- portfolios;
- and conversational defenses of major conclusions.
Each course record is intended to document what resources I used, what I created, what I learned, what remains uncertain, and which question should come next.
The available completion marks are also designed around revision rather than punishment:
- High Pass: Strong understanding, evidence use, synthesis, and appropriate treatment of uncertainty.
- Pass: Sound understanding and completion of the course outcomes.
- Revise: Promising work that needs correction, better evidence, or clearer reasoning.
- Incomplete: A course intentionally paused and available to resume later.
- Prior Learning Demonstrated: Requirements supported through existing education or documented work.
The purpose is not to manufacture perfect grades for myself.
The purpose is to create an honest record of what I can now explain and where my understanding remains weak.
How will this fit into an already full life?
This is the part that will determine whether the program remains enjoyable.
I have children, household responsibilities, technical projects, writing, business concerns, financial pressure, and other educational goals.
I cannot approach this as though I were a full-time traditional student with an empty schedule.
The recommended rhythm is one Curiosity Day each week.
That may provide approximately three to six focused hours for reading, note-taking, lectures, research, an applied activity, or work on a course project.
The default is one course at a time.
A typical three-credit-equivalent course may take approximately eight to fourteen weeks at a leisure pace. Missed weeks do not create penalties. I return to the last meaningful question and continue.
The plan also allows curiosity breaks between major stages or whenever the work begins to feel obligatory.
The rule that protects the hobby
The program must restore curiosity rather than become another source of burnout
I am allowed to pause, change the pace, validate material I already understand, choose a different concentration, stop at a completed milestone, or follow a new question. The structure should support learning—not turn a voluntary interest into another impossible workload.
This may be harder for me than it sounds.
I tend to turn interests into extensive plans. I can overbuild a project, create more requirements than necessary, and then feel responsible for completing everything I imagined.
The existence of a 204-credit map does not mean I must carry the entire map every time I sit down to study.
My responsibility is the current course.
More specifically, it is the current question inside the current course.
What role will fieldwork and practical experience have?
I do not want the program to remain entirely theoretical.
Practical experience may include museums, archives, historic places, digital collections, public lectures, citizen-science projects, supervised volunteering, public maps, lawful landscape observation, home simulations, or work with open datasets.
That does not give me permission to conduct unauthorized archaeology.
The program prohibits digging, probing, metal detecting, collecting, removing, cleaning, altering, or disturbing archaeological material without legal permission and qualified supervision.
It also prohibits disturbing graves, human remains, funerary objects, sacred material, and vulnerable site locations.
Fieldwork is treated as stewardship rather than treasure hunting.
The Society for American Archaeology describes stewardship as the collaborative management of the archaeological record for the benefit of all people. Its guidance emphasizes long-term conservation, education, accessibility, and respect for Indigenous and descendant communities.[4]
Documentation and preservation are more important than possession.
For early courses, practical work can remain simple and non-destructive:
- creating a mock stratigraphy exercise with modern objects;
- running dating-method simulations;
- cataloging household objects or public museum images;
- comparing historic and present-day maps;
- using public geographic data;
- studying digital fossil models;
- visiting a museum or historic site;
- or creating a documented local-history project from lawful public records.
The ethical limitations are part of the education, not obstacles placed around it.
Where does my previous education fit?
I already have substantial college and self-directed learning experience.
The program allows some introductory material to be validated through prior education or a challenge portfolio rather than repeated mechanically.
That does not mean I should skip a course because a topic looks familiar.
Advanced standing should represent retained understanding.
If I cannot explain a concept, use it, identify its limitations, or connect it with the next course, then familiarity is not enough.
Some requirements—especially ethics, field safety, practicum work, original graduate research, and major capstones—cannot be replaced merely by saying I have read about them before.
The goal is to avoid unnecessary repetition without pretending that previous exposure equals mastery.

The recommended starting point is HSP 101: Introduction to the Human Story.
It begins with a question that will affect every later course:
What counts as evidence?
The course compares archaeological, historical, geological, genetic, and testimonial evidence. It then moves through deep time, chronology, context, provenance, scientific reconstruction, historical reconstruction, human origins, archaeology, Earth history, local evidence, and the difference among what is known, inferred, disputed, and missing.
The final work is a synthesis for a general audience and a decision about which question should guide the next course.
That starting point makes sense to me.
Before trying to memorize the entire human story, I need to understand how anyone can responsibly reconstruct one.
What would make this program successful?
Success does not require turning the hobby into a profession.
It does not require completing every stage, calling myself an expert, or convincing anyone that an independent transcript is equivalent to an accredited degree.
The program succeeds when I can explain something accurately that I could not explain before.
It succeeds when I become less likely to trust weak evidence simply because a claim is interesting.
It succeeds when I understand which conclusions are strong, which remain disputed, and what new evidence could change them.
It succeeds when I produce a durable collection of notes, projects, maps, timelines, source analyses, field observations, and public explanations that show how my understanding developed.
Most importantly, it succeeds when the learning remains enjoyable.
I have enough areas of life where unfinished work feels like failure.
The Human Story should be a place where an unanswered question is not another burden.
It is an invitation to keep looking.
